Rights to education

Education remains vital to reducing poverty and inequality in Thailand. Thai government provides children access to education until grade 12. However, the quality of education is still inconsistent.Due to limited number of students per school in the rural and remote areas, the Ministry of Education has issued a policy to merge and close down 7,000 small schools all over the country. Consequently, this directly affects children, their families and communities.

ActionAid Thailand is working to improve the quality of education in small schools and capacity of teachers. We also support the Small Schools Network, the Committee on Alternative Education and Thai Baan Association in strengthening and empowering the network to influence the change of government policyin relation to closure/merger of small schools at national level. ActionAidThailand works closely with the Small School Network to develop a small school model that focuses on participation of communities in school management, developing a curriculum tailored to small schools, and training on budget tracking to develop appropriate financial model for small schools. In addition, we are developing a book to share experiences on small school model and generate awareness and support from the public.
